Model United Nations

The University of Montana Model United Nations Simulation (MMUN)
                The Model United Nations (MMUN) Program aims to educate high school participants about international  current events, topics in international relations, the use of diplomacy and compromise, research techniques, networking with other country delegates, drafting advanced position papers, drafting resolutions, and voting, all while using Robert’s Rules of Order.  MMUN begins in mid-September of the current school year and ends with a two day simulated United Nations session in late November.  To participate, a student must be in high school and be dedicated to completing all tasks with the highest degree of accuracy and dedication.  Students who participate will:

PREPARATION FOR MMUN SIMULATION

  • Choose a country and UN committee to serve as a delegate
  • Perform research into the demographics and geopolitics of their chosen country
  • Perform advanced and detailed research in response to situations that are before their committee in the UN
  • Draft a well written and researched position paper that answers the situation

ROLE PLAY IN MMUN SIMULATION

  • Work with other delegates who make up the country delegation in forming a united front while in UN simulations
  • While in committee, work with other delegates (network) in finding compromises and solutions and then drafting resolutions for other delegates to consider
  • Give speeches in support or opposition to resolutions that are put forth
  • Vote on the resolutions

2010 - TIED FOR FIRST PLACE– BEST LARGE SCHOOL

  • Outstanding Delegate Award – Mitch Shellman, Zach LaBenne, Caleb Drechsel, Steven Hallgren, and David Minerath
  • Best Delegate Award – James George, Raul Mondragon
  • Honorable Mention Delegate Award – Travis Griffard
  • Best Country Delegation Award representing Afghanistan (Rebecca Winzer, Mitch Shellman, Raul Mondragon, and Travis Griffard)
  • Honorable Mention Country Delegation Award representing France (David Minerath, Cesar Stoddard, Parker Matthews, and James George)
